Can i replace the cas with a used one ,If it is possible what is the process

Yes you can. But power class should be same in both: original and donor.
Change vin from cas replacement-> advanced.
From FA manager backup original FA and restore it donor.
Copy isn from original to donor
Copy keys from original to donor (key learning->option 1).
Restart session(leave BMW software and return back)
Encode donor cas, then it is done.

or could you just use cas replacement function. i use it 2 times and works great. i do a backup of both cas just in case and after that i run the job. 2 min job

Check from manual coding: cas power class, dme power class must match.
Copy FA from frm
Read isn from DME, right to donor CAS
You will loose original keys

while installing a used dme it asked for a cas firmware , while doing that that the cas died

As above, had same thing happen to me only last week with a new dealer supplied cas,
re-flashed and now all good.

By bdm you mean i need a tool to read the flash and eprom. if i do read this i would need a flash file where would I be able to get the file

you will need an r270 or xprog
