2011 1.6d mini trying to copy cas details, reads original then when trying to copy over tells me no active key in ignition, I have dde old cas with key key slot and used cas, surely I dont need a key from doner cas to continue?

If CAS is encrypted you will always need a working key.

Even for donator cas? Or you can write in it with no issues?

Forget about the CAS is donor or original. If you want to make a key, or change ISN you will need a working key.

There is no need a working key for changing isn in another cas3+. And there is a chance to make key for cas3+ in situation all keys lost even without dme/dde isn

If this is the situation, just clone the damn thing.... Or buy cas with key...

I will pass an internal a trick when all key lost and there is no way to recover the DME ISN from there, or not needed anyway (like the donor CAS). It works on 90% of cases:
You go to key programming, then select all keys lost. you will be asked for ISN or SK. write the following in the ISN location: 00000000 (8 zeros), then click on continue. Ahtohex II will try to make a key for this CAS omitting maintaining the ISN/SK real value.
If you are lucky (90% you are), you will get a CAS with a working key, then you can continue your job by writing the DME ISN, changing VIN,...etc.
